our healthy community
Downtown St. Petersburg is a neighborhood in transition. Affordable housing is decreasing with development of St. Petersburg’s waterfront area. The lack of affordable housing and the availability of service providers near several lakefront parks attracts many homeless people to the neighborhood. The community is comprised of a high concentration of rental and subsidized housing for seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities, including seven large senior apartment towers. The downtown area includes a wide variety of other land uses including Tropicana Field, offices, retail stores, restaurants, light industrial facilities and government buildings.
Major assets include St. Anthony’s Hospital, the Mirror Lake Library, the health department, the main police station, a county courthouse and many social service agencies and private non-profit entities. Working with these organizations with input from the neighborhood residents, the initial focus to improve the quality of life is to help residents get connected with housing, jobs, health care and cultural activities.
