The Church Hill/East District community surrounds Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital. The community represents great opportunity for positive change and improvement in many areas. Church Hill is a historic and beautiful part of the Richmond City landscape. The East District area of Church Hill has fallen victim over time to many of the socio-economic dilemmas common in many urban environments. Four of the city’s largest Section VIII housing communities are located in the East District of Church Hill within one mile of each other. The neighborhood lacks many services and conveniences common in healthier parts of the city. However, the residents remain proud of their community and want to work together to make needed changes and improvements.
In collaboration with the neighborhood residents and other collaborators, the initial focuses to improve the quality of life are prenatal care, childhood obesity, education and environmental beautification.
