Our Healthy Community is a quaint neighborhood in an area of Norfolk, Virginia, known as the Pleasant Avenue area of East Ocean View. The strength of this community lies in its leaders. The church community is committed to the people of East Ocean View, as is the leadership at the local community center, the civic league, and the small business community. Another strength of this community is its rich diversity, with a variety of ethnic, religious, and economic groups adding a unique flavor to the neighborhood.
By partnering with local churches, civic organizations, city government, and other grassroots organizations, Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System has been able to reach out to the community in many ways. Recent activities include a neighborhood beautification project (“The Great Bush Giveaway”), the renovation and expansion of the local Storehouse Food Pantry that was destroyed by the November 2009 flood and a variety of community outreach programs including the “Youth Survival Night,” the Fourth of July “Freedom Festival,” Thanksgiving dinner programs, and Christmas families.
